CCTV vs Access Control: Which Does Your Property Actually Need?

CCTV and access control get bundled together so often in security quotes that it's easy to assume they do the same job. They don't — and knowing the difference helps you spend your security budget on what will actually reduce risk at your property.

What CCTV actually does

Cameras record what happens. They're a deterrent, a way to review an incident after the fact, and — with remote viewing — a way to check on a property in real time from your phone. What CCTV does not do on its own is stop someone getting in. By the time a camera has captured useful footage, whatever it recorded has usually already happened.

What access control actually does

Access control — biometric readers, keypads, card access, boom gates, video intercoms — decides who is allowed through a specific point in the first place. It's a preventative layer rather than a recording one, and it creates a log of exactly who came and went, and when, which matters for offices, complexes and body corporates that need that record for accountability rather than just security.

Typical situations and what tends to fit

They work better together than either does alone

Access control tells you who unlocked a door. CCTV shows you what actually happened once they were through it. Combined, an access log and a matching camera timestamp make it far easier to establish exactly what occurred during an incident, rather than relying on one source alone.

Where to go for each

We handle CCTV installation as part of our network and security services, often alongside network cabling since modern IP cameras share the same infrastructure. For dedicated access control, alarm systems and electric fencing, our sister company Elite CCTV Installation specialises specifically in that side of physical security and can quote a combined system with us where a property needs both.
